EFFECTIVE TREE SOIL DECOMPACTION

At Rob Keyzor Tree Surgeons & Arboricultural Consultants in Stafford, we offer expert tree soil decompaction services to address issues affecting tree health. Our specialised techniques improve soil conditions, helping trees overcome problems like compaction, poor drainage, and nutrient deficiencies. With a focus on enhancing soil biome health, we also provide comprehensive tree care, including pruning, stump grinding, and planting. Our experienced team ensures high-quality service tailored to both commercial and domestic needs. Contact us now for reliable tree care.

WHY DO WE NEED TO LOOK AFTER THE SOIL?

Trees rely on the soil around them for support, water, and nutrient absorption. The soil provides essential resources for new growth and supports vital processes like photosynthesis. Trees also form beneficial relationships with soil-borne fungi, which help them access nutrients. However, the relationship between trees and soil can be compromised by persistent harmful conditions such as compaction, contamination, or poor drainage. These issues can damage the entire soil biome, including both fauna and flora, making it difficult for fibrous roots to thrive. When the soil becomes unsuitable, trees may show signs of stress, such as canopy dieback, poor leaf distribution, and abnormal leaf colour or size. These symptoms often take years to appear, long after the original damage has occurred. To help trees recover and maintain their health, we focus on improving soil conditions, restoring the balance of the soil biome, and creating a more hospitable environment for root growth.

HOW DO WE IMPROVE SOIL CONDITIONS?

We use a specialised tool called a Geo Injector to inject compressed air into the soil at depths between 300mm and 800mm. This process helps to relieve compaction and create air spaces in the soil. Additionally, we can introduce granular additives like fertiliser or biochar to enhance soil quality or prevent the newly formed air spaces from closing over time. These additives improve soil conditions and help maintain better drainage. If needed, inert granular material can be used in place of biochar. Soil amelioration is also part of our approach, ensuring that the soil structure is optimised for long-term health. If needed, inert granular material can be used in place of biochar.

WHAT IS BIOCHAR?

Biochar is a granular material made from charcoal, produced from biomass, used to improve soil. It is highly durable, breaking down very slowly over centuries, which helps sequester carbon in the soil rather than releasing it as CO2. Biochar can also help adjust acidic pH levels, making the soil more fertile and hospitable to flora and fauna. Its porous structure and large surface area make biochar ideal for supporting microecosystems. It can be enriched with nutrients and fungi before being added to the soil, benefiting tree roots and other soil flora.

WHEN IS SOIL IMPROVEMENT USED?

Soil improvement is commonly applied to address issues like compaction, which can also lead to persistent waterlogging or disturbances caused by development work. These treatments help improve tree health with minimal risk of harm. Biochar applications generally have a positive effect in most situations, though a preliminary site assessment is needed to determine the most appropriate approach.
